German farmers overcome bad start to lift sowings

German farmers overcame a poor start to the autumn sowing season to lift plantings by 3.2% - raising prospects for the bigger European Union harvest next year that analysts are pencilling in.

Growers in the EU's second ranked grains producer sowed 5.52m hectares with winter crops, a rise of more than 170,000 hectares on last year, defying ideas that a late harvest, caused by summer rains, would prevent many farms from realising sowing ambitions.

While the rains did stop farmers in northern Germany planting winter rapeseed, which tends to be early sown, with area in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein plunging 32%, a dry autumn – reflected in low Rhine and Danube water levels – allowed area to be switched to grains.

Indeed, Schleswig-Holstein farmers in the end managed a near-12% jump in winter crop area.

After two years of disappointing harvests, thanks largely to harvest rains, the data raised hopes for better production in 2012, as analysts foresee for the EU as a whole.

Strategie Grains last week estimated the EU grains harvest in 2012 u 289.6m tonnes, a rise of 5.8m tonnes year on year, despite sowings estimated flat u 23.1m hectares.

Biggest increases

The rise in German winter plantings was led by rebounds in sowings of rye, up 8.5%, and barley, up 5.6%.

"The largest area expansions were recorded in Schleswig-Holstein, with a rise of about 26%, and in Brandenburg with a rise of about 13%," the German statitistics office, Destatis, said.

Wheat area was pegged u 3.2m hectares, up 2.0% year on year.

Triticale was the only crop which proved less popular with growers, with even rapeseed area rising, by 1.3% to 1.3m hectares, despite the poor conditions in the north.

"The largest percentage increases in area of winter rapeseed were recorded by Thuringia, with an increase of about 11%, and Brandenburg with a rise of 10%," Destatis said.

Germany has about 11.9m hectares of arable area overall, with sileage corn and root crops among popular spring-seeded crops.

Land set aside has been on a steady decline, from 309,500 hectares in 2008 to 228,700 hectares last year.

EU wheat harvest to rebound above 140m tonnes

The European Union wheat harvest, the world's biggest, is to rebound above 140m tonnes despite only a marginal rise in sowings - assuming no repeat of the dryness which hampered this year's yields.

Strategie Grains, in its first formal forecast for the EU's 2012 wheat crop, pegged it u 142.4m tonnes, including the durum variety used to make pasta.

A result u that level would be the best since the record 2008 harvest, which topped 150m tonnes, and represent an increase of 3.5% year on year.

And it reflects higher hopes for the average yield, which the analysis group pegged, for non-durum wheat, u 5.8 tonnes per hectare using analysis of historical trends.

This year's yield was held back to 5.6 tonnes per hectare by a historically-dry spring in western Europe, from which many areas have yet fully to recover water levels, although some better-watered eastern countries achieved bumper harvests.

'Adversely wet conditions'

However, the estimate was below a preliminary figure released last month when Strategie Grains pegged the non-durum, or soft wheat, crop u 135.8m tonnes, compared with 133.5m tonnes on Thursday.


The decline reflected trimmed expectations for sowings, pegged u 23.1m hectares for soft wheat, bank in line with those for the newly-finished harvest.

The estimate echoes a forecast from the United Nations' food agency, the Food and Agriculture Organization, last week that EU wheat sowings would prove "unchanged from last year", bucking a world trend of increased plantings.

"Although wheat prices remain relatively high, crop rotation requirements and attractive prices for other crops will influence farmers' planting decisions," the FAO said.

The agency also flagged "adversely wet conditions" in some parts of Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal and the UK this autumn.

"By contrast, soil moisture availability was less than ideal in some important eastern growing countries such as Hungary and Romania."

This dryness has been reflected in the low water levels which are still disrupting grains transport along the Danube, impeding exports from Eastern Europe.

Back to barley

Strategie Grains estimated that EU farmers would opt increasingly for barley instead, for which sowings will rise by 300,000 hectares to 12.2m hectares, if remaining u a historically low level.

EU barley area has steadily declined from more than 20m hectares for the 1980 harvest, but relative firmness in prices has lured growers back to the grain, with the region's malting barley prices being supported by a poor-quality crop in Denmark.

For feed barley, the Canadian Wheat Board, the world's top seller of the grain, noted last month that "fundamentals still remain relatively tight compared to wheat", if adding that "slowly declining world trade over the last five years has taken a lot of the heat out of a tighter supply-and-demand environment".

Strategie Grains estimated the EU's total grains harvest in 2012 u 289.6m tonnes, up 2.0%, with the rate of increase held back by expectations that this year's record corn yields will not be repeated.

btw. prekjučer u razgovor sa direktorom jednog od većih otkupljivača pa naravno neizbježan razgovor i cijene pšenice 2012... njegova procjena 90 lipa..
a oni su ove godine najskuplje pšenicu platili 1,62 kune proizvođaču iz Subotičkog luga..

tomybrzic je napisao/la: zna se da kako todoric kaze tako bude jer htijeli mi to ili ne to je nazalost tako, sto se tice zastitne cijene cini mi se da je 1.20 kuna stoga neznam sa kakim taj informacijama barata i to jos sa 0,90 lipa u koje se nitko od nas ne uklapa jer je proizvodnja skuplja 0.30 lipa znaci da cemo opet kao i do sad biti zrtveni janjci... mada se nebi iznenadio da nam uteraju opet po ko zna koli puta.... nova vlada je dosla pa cemo da vidimo kako oni plivaju u poljoprivrednim vodama....
